"Dartmouth" (1836)

Original steel engraving by J. B. Allen, sc from an original painting by C. Stanfield

The etching was imprinted in  London by Smith, Elder & Co. in 1836 which has later been hand-colored and  measures 250m x 170mm. Dartmouth, having a deep and capacious harbor, where 500 sail of large ships can ride in safety, Dartmouth has from very early times been a place of trade and maritime importance. The fleet destined for the Holy Land assembled here in 1190. Wool, wine, and iron constituted its principal commerce in the reign of Edward I. Until the beginning of the 20th century, a large Newfoundland trade was carried on there, but it has much declined of late years. The coasting trade of the port was rather extensive as the imports consisted of coal, timber, and general merchandise, and the exports of cider, barley, potatoes, stone, slate. The number of vessels registered there was 463, amounting together to 34,041 tons.

Engravings like this one are cataloged in Tate Britain, an art gallery situated on Millbank in London, and part of the Tate gallery network in Britain, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It was the first gallery to be established within the network, opening in 1897. It houses a substantial collection of the work of Clarkson Frederick Stanfield.
